To Ryan's excitement, Bruce Campbell is coming out with a movie celebrating...well, himself. It's titled My Name Is Bruce (no affiliation with NBC's My Name Is Earl), and Campbell will play himself. As Campbell is an Oregon resident, the movie will be filmed here. They start production in Southern Oregon soon, and it should be out in '07. Here's the synopsis from Bruce's website:
My Name Is Bruce is the tale of a small town set upon by demons after a group of teen-agers unwittingly unleash an ancient curse. Campbell, playing himself, is kidnapped off the set of a B horror movie and, despite his protestations that he's just an actor, is forced to play the role of his heroic movie character in order to save the town.
For those of you who don't know, Bruce Campbell is considered the most famous B-movie actor of all time. He is an icon, and earned this status primarily from his role as "Ash" in the Evil Dead movies, seen below with his "boomstick", a sawed off double-barreled 12 gauge Remington shotgun, and his chainsaw, which was adapted to replace his right hand after he amputated it himself in Evil Dead II after being possessed by a Kandarian spirit.
If you've ever seen the show Entourage (yes, the one I talk about all the time on HBO), then you can make this comparison with me. Bruce Campbell is Johnny Drama. An actor that had a series of small B-movies that built a huge cult following and became underground legends. A perpetually struggling actor from then on that finds most of his work at film conventions.
I have so much love for him though, because he knew he was making hillariously bad movies, and turned them into classics. He doesn't take himself too seriously, and is definitely a likable guy. If you've never seen an Evil Dead movie, go rent one and prepare to laugh and love it.
Thanks to Ryan for exposing me to the legend of Ash/Bruce Campbell.
